I experienced many learning activities throughout the BSN
program that helped me achieve outcome number one, which states; apply
leadership concepts, skills, and decision making in order to provide oversight
and accountability for the delivery of safe, quality care in a variety of
healthcare settings. The assigned
readings from the text, Essentials of
Nursing Leadership and Management, during the leadership/management course made
me aware of the characteristics that create a trusted and valued leader in a
healthcare setting. The multiple
assignments and discussions during this same course helped me memorize certain
techniques the enable team problem solving and solid interpersonal
relationships with employees including the FOCUS technique and caring leader behaviors.
I was also made aware of the variety of resources available that promote
strategies for decreasing conflict in the workplace including the Journal of Conflict Resolution. I
participated in a wonderful opportunity which enabled me to practice the
varying leadership techniques and styles learned throughout the class during a
leadership/management project at my place of employment. During the project I surveyed employees about
the current management styles and presented the results and ways
to become a more transformational environment to the management team.
Before the
leadership/management course I had no idea how to lead others or empower others
to work toward a common goal or interest.
I now plan to apply outcome one in my future practice using a few
specific techniques. I will be a transformational leader, which is one who has
the ability to motivate and inspire others to work toward a common goal. Being an employee centered leader usually is
an element of transformational leaders because they genuinely care for their
employees well being, concerns, and opinions.
The environment I lead will be a democratic society because I believe in
the importance of everyone’s opinion, so that the outcome will have come from a
collective effort and be appropriate for the majority involved. Teamwork is of
upmost importance and I will concentrate on creating an atmosphere of teamwork
by using the FOCUS system, which is used to make improvements as a collective
group. I will strive to exhibit caring
leader behaviors towards my employees, which include belief, knowing, being,
doing, and enabling.
